🎓 Connectic and academic research: our collaboration with UCLouvain - Catholic University of Louvain

At Connectic, we enjoy delving into the concrete problems of our teams with a fresh perspective.

This is what led us to welcome Antoine Bongartz, a Master's student in Computer Science at the Louvain School of Engineering (UCLouvain), for his final thesis.

Under the supervision of Professor Pierre Schaus, with guidance from Ioannis A. Kostis on the academic side, and supported internally by Robin Houart, who accompanied him throughout his thesis. 🙌

🔍 The topic? Designing and evaluating a conversational assistant capable of querying our internal data in natural language.

A large part of the useful information for daily use - projects, tasks, business opportunities, internal documentation - is already in our tools. But spread across several sources, it is not always easy to find quickly.

Antoine designed a system capable of understanding a simply posed question, retrieving the right pieces of information, and then generating a clear response. All tested on real use cases imagined with our teams. 💬

🧪 What makes this work interesting is its methodology. Rather than judging the system as a whole, Antoine analysed each layer separately: selecting the right source, researching the right documents, generating the response.

And he compared it to other possible approaches.

Result: a precise view of the strengths and areas for improvement, and a better understanding of the trade-offs between performance and cost.

💡 For Connectic, this collaboration has brought us a lot. An independent and demanding analysis of our internal AI tracks. Concrete avenues for improvement for our future tools. And the pride of having supported a young researcher on a topic as technical as it is useful for our activity.

Exactly the type of bridge between business and the academic world that we want to continue building.

🙏 A big thank you to Antoine for his seriousness and the quality of his work, as well as to UCLouvain, Professor Schaus, Ioannis Kostis, and Robin Houart for their daily support.

Presentation slide of Antoine Bongartz's thesis (UCLouvain) on a RAG conversational assistant querying Connectic's internal data
Slide illustrating the finding: information already exists at Connectic but remains difficult to retrieve across multiple sources and tools.
Slide presenting the research question of the thesis: designing a conversational assistant based on RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
Slide presenting the four internal data sources analysed: projects, tasks, CRM opportunities and knowledge base
Diagram of the architecture in 5 steps, from data extraction to response generation (extract, translate, index, route, respond)
Slide describing the step-by-step evaluation methodology on 47 real use cases: routing, search, generation
Slide of results: routing and generation are strong, document search remains the main bottleneck
Slide on the performance/control trade-off: about 60% cost reduction per question thanks to the 3 layers measured separately
Slide summarising the benefits of collaboration for Connectic: independent analysis, improvement suggestions and reusable method
Slide of thanks to Antoine Bongartz, to UCLouvain, to Professor Pierre Schaus and to Ioannis Kostis for this collaboration
