🚜 Standardise data collection across a multi-power fleet: successful test at a materials handling equipment rental company 📊
At Connectic, we enjoy concrete technical challenges. Here is the feedback from a test conducted at a materials handling and forklift rental company, active in both short and long-term rentals, with real expertise in equipment customisation (seats, forks, specific configurations).
🎯 The need
The client has a heterogeneous fleet: diesel trucks, gas trucks, and electric trucks. The objective: to standardise data collection across the entire fleet, regardless of the power type, using a single methodology.
🚧 The challenge
✔ Adapt the installation to 3 types of power (diesel, gas, electric)
✔ Manage very different voltage levels: 12-24V on thermal vehicles, up to 80-90V on electric vehicles
✔ Identify, on electric vehicles, a reliable signal indicating the actual operation of the machine (in the absence of a conventional thermal engine)
✔ Prioritise a simple, robust and easily replicable solution rather than a complex integration
💡 The Connectic solution
In collaboration with a specialised technician skilled in vehicle electrical plans, we have:
🔹 Deployed the Teltonica FTC921 beacon on thermal and electric trolleys, thanks to its compatibility with all voltage levels, allowing for a unique and standardised installation
🔹 Used a classic 3-wire connection (ground, permanent power, engine contact) on thermal trolleys
🔹 Retrieved, on the electric, the signal from the traction encoder (the component that controls the forward/reverse of the vehicle) to precisely determine operating times
🔹 Tested a CAN data retrieval (engine bus) as a complement, before deciding on a simpler 3-wire approach that is more easily deployable at scale
🔹 Centralised all data in the Fullyn Core platform and enabled the implementation of specific calculators
🔹 Sent the information back to the Hiboo Fleet Management solution
📊 The results
The test validated a consistent data collection methodology, regardless of the type of engine:
✅ Actual operating time of each machine
✅ Production rate (machine in motion, engine on)
✅ Idle rate (engine on, machine at rest)
✅ A unique solution, simple to deploy, without unnecessary complexity for the client or the technical teams
Why Connectic?
Because beyond technology, our strength lies in the ability to adapt to very varied field constraints, different engines, different voltages, access to native data, to propose, each time, the most relevant and sustainable solution.
